Oh Pumpkin Games of Delight!

over at

Has come up with a couple of really cute games to delight your students as they practice
letters, numbers to 100, and the first 100 Frye Words...

Cute and sooooo easy to create!  Just print, cut and PLAY!

Easy to follow directions with a card to change up the ordinary "Sorry" game as they have to choose a player to change cards with if picked!

What's the value?

We're working with Place Value this week and I thought it would be fun to add some word work into the mix...integration being all that it is :)

We took our math task folders and started working on solving the following tasks...NOTE: this is after the use of models and manipulatives to create tens and ones in numbers....

Interestingly enough...we found that some of us needed to review the definition of vowels and consonants...so we talked about the glue bottles and how vowels are the letters that glue the word together...no vowel...no word...and all the other letters are the consonants...whew...disaster diverted!

We started with a spelling word like
chore
then we wrote the value of each letter under the letter...

c     h    o    r    e
10   10  1   10  1

Then some friends created a number equation... 10 + 10 + 1 + 10 + 1 =

And others just decided they would count the tens and the ones

And others still decided they would draw a model...like the place value rods and then count the tens and ones...

Lots of thinking and explaining what they thought and how they solved the problems.

We'll add this into the word working as well as a choice for Math by Myself this week to help us use our words in mathematical ways...yeah...

You can download a copy of the tasks  {HERE}...

Number Bonds

Primary-Techie

I totally LOVE the number bond powerpoints that The Primary Techie has created!

The kiddos get a view of a number of pie in a formation...

Some of the pies are eaten and they have to decide what number is missing before the screen shows the part/part/whole mat...

Each game works on fluency to a certain number...she's offering the fluency to 12 for free right now...

And she's having a SALE ....
You can get quite a few of the number bond fluencies for 90 cents!
Bargain!

Be sure to check out her Watch, Think, and Color power points as well!
She has a variety of cool ideas using expanded form, number words, 10 more and 10 less, and MORE!

Hop over and Check out...

Personal Word Wall Poster

I've been brushing up on the upper levels of the guided reading groups using Jan Richardson's wonderful book...

I love the clear wording and suggested activities for each level of reader!
I can create simple lesson plans to make each group time count for the readers that I'm meeting with during that small window of time...10-15 minutes...

She provides a personal word wall in the book to help students write using correct spelling and since that's going to be a big push to get things on the hall wall this year...I've made a copy of the "personal word wall words" from her book for each students writing journal.  The thought is .... 80% of the words listed on this personal 100 word wall list are in our everyday writing...so if we can sound out the rest and use our phonic skills to write and then have them "check the list" under letter ____ to see if you've spelled a word in your second sentence right...they'll become better with the spelling as they progress with their writing...

I've created a large "Swamp Frog Word wall" to hang in a prominent area of the room....
to be determined...
so that we can refer to both of the resources and so that I can practice some words in small groups during the writing words time...

I've noticed there's TONS of personal word wall thoughts out and about on the NET...
just google personal word walls and see all the links that show up...
Cheryl Signmon offers a free blank word wall chart HERE or check out her site HERE
Using My Teacher Voice has a free personal word wall for download HERE
A Love for Teaching has a blank word wall template HERE

How or do you do a word wall?...how useful is it?....how does it fit in with your writing?

I Love this book!  It's been a go to book for my K-2nd grade reading groups throughout the years!
