Mystery Math QR Code Scanning


About a week ago, we purchased an outdoor shed to hold our bikes and lawnmower.  There was this cool code on the box called a QR code.  Using the RedLaser iPhone app, I scanned the code with my iPhone and it took me to the cutest little movie on how easy the building was to set up and the different uses we could do with it….I’m thinking…how cool is that!!!

I read a post on one of the technology blog sites for the upper grades that had converted questions to QR codes so the kids could scan them and answer the questions on their papers….I’m thinking…how cool is that!!!  But…I couldn’t figure out how to write the code:(  
(I just pretend to know technological things…most of the time I’m pretty baffled!)

UNTIL….I stumbled across a blog called “Cool Cat Teacher Blog” and there was this widget with QR code…whoo hoo…... Talk about simple pimple!!!!!

I used it to creat the Mystery Math QR Code Scan sheet for a test drive (also had to confiscated my son’s iPod Touch with a camera)  so the kids will scan the code…write the math problem on their paper and solve the number sentence…I’m so excited to see how they do….

Mystery Frog Number Sentences



I was reading a post over at "The Polka Dot Patch" and saw some interesting ideas about dots and bugs and math sentences....

So.... I rearranged the idea and made some Frog Mystery Number Sentences for my kiddos to use this week.  Not being a very intelligent person today...instead of running the frogs on cardstock that is colored, I ran them on white and used watercolors to paint the frogs...two per color...
 

 

Then I added the dots to each set to make a math fact family for the kids to create on their papers...I'll have my wonderful aide laminate and cut out tomorrow so that the center will be ready to go by Tuesday.  The idea is to color the frog on your worksheet the same color as the frogs you are looking at and record a number sentence.  I'll have mine use colored crayons and a foldable to write the numbers into a math fact family...should be interesting!

Blogging on the Go!

 
My husband is an Ultra Runner!  Really...he runs Ultra Marathons (50 and 100 mile races)....for FUN!!!
So in an effort to help me overcome the Blog Butt Syndrome...he rigged up this plank across his Ultra expensive treadmill and now I can blog and walk at the same time!  (Cause I'm NOT a runner....just not the body type...)
I've actually gotten pretty adept at typing and blogging at the same time...hey!  I'm doing it now :)  And I've only ever ALMOST fallen off twice...and if you know me, that's saying a lot!  I'm pretty much a klutz!  I don't think I ever made it through a balance beam routine in HS gymnastics without falling off at least once!
So come on friends...walk with me for awhile!
I'm working on the next game for math and will post before my walk is done I hope!
Here's to getting back into my "skinny" jeans....well...I've actually never really had skinny jeans...but I'd like to keep from going up another size before I hit 50!

Art Show Amazing!


Just taking a moment to shine the light on my son and his awesome talent with art!  This is his first year in an art class at the High School level and he has some amazing pieces!  This rose was part of the school's recent art show.  Love it!  I plan to frame this one and hang it in the family room!


His self portrait was detailed and very intriguing.... Shouting out props to my peep!

Plant Unit Ideas

A Unit of Plants

We ended our unit on plants this week, so I thought I’d share some of the things we enjoyed doing….

We kicked off our unit with an in-school field trip from the Botanical Gardens about seeds and how plants grow from seeds.  We started an experiment with bean seeds to see if they would sprout without soil… 

 

We used the leveled readers from A to Z Reading to help us learn more about plants as we studied them.  The advanced group used “About Trees” level P….The on-level group used “Strange Plants” level K….and The strategic intervention group used “A Seed Grows” level G.  Each story came with a set of lesson plans as well as comprehension questions and tests.   




We used some cool You Tube videos of the Venus Fly Trap eating to zoom in on this strange carnivorous plant!  After watching several of the clips and seeing how the plant moves and grooves, we created a directed draw of the Venus Fly Trap and wrote two things we learned and one question we still had about this strange plant!


I also went to You Tube and found a cute movie on Eric Carle’s “The Tiny Seed”.  We watched the short film and then discussed things that helped the seed and things that hurt the seed.  A teammate had a cute Mailbox worksheet for the kids to cut and paste the items from the book into two groups…helpful and hurtful. 



We enjoyed using our knowledge to create the brace map from
She had her students using the computer to create the thinking maps....very cool!  I had them use things around the room and changed the way the map looked a little by having the kids recycle some tissue paper for their flower, green paper leaves, a pipe cleaner for the stem, and some yarn for the roots.  I had the kids make their own brackets and then created a paper for them to sort through the functions of each plant part. 


Froggy Friends Fun had a cute post on a hairy project which reminded me of the adorable Harrys my mom sent me last year to create with the kids....so we put together some Harry Heads to see if we could get some grass to grow.  I cut knee high hose into two pieces … added grass seed to the top for the hair…. added potting soil to create the rest of the head…shaping it into a cone shape…tied it off at the bottom for the roots and stored it in a clear cup….eyes and a mouth added with glue finish off the Harry’s Head and now the waiting starts…each Harry went home with the directions to keep water in the bottom of the cup and spritz the top of his head to keep the seeds moist.








After we put together the Harrys...the kids got to name them and write a First, Next, Then, Last story to tell the way they created their project.  They drew a picture to go along with their projects...I sent them home and kept one in the class.  The kids are now tasked with taking care of the Harrys at home and sending in digital pictures when their hair starts to grow.




Another book we started, but haven’t quite finished yet is…”Tops and Bottoms” by Janet Stevens.  We've spent some time with the vocabulary in this book and talking about synonyms and antonyms to go with the words...I was quite surprised that many did not know what the word "lazy" meant...as you can imagine....that was an interesting discussion!



We ended the week with online story tests I created using Google Docs…The kids used their leveled readers to complete the comprehension tests and their answers were recorded to my account.  I can print out the answers and grade the tests quickly.
….love this tool in Google Docs! …and the kids had fun using the computers to show what they know.

So it's back to the basal reader next week in time for "Dot and Jabber" and interestingly enough....it's about how a seed is carried to a new place to grow...what a mystery!  Wonder who thought to put the plant unit before this story???  That would be my team mates!  I'm very blessed to be working with an amazing group of ladies!

Read Around the World


Deb Goodman at Shallowford Falls Elementary shared a great idea for reviewing

soooooo....I worked it around to have the High Frequency Words from Units 4 and 5 from the Reading Street  program to use this week for Earth Day...  I plan to set the stopwatch and see if they can beat their times throughout the week....we'll see how it goes...

Flipping Frogs!

Dollar Tree finds for the day...

Take a baby blanket and add some fabric paint to make a target for the flipping frogs to land on...

and you've got a quick and fun math tub for next week!


I added numbers to the target and the kids will have                      
to flip their frogs onto the targets to see how many points they
can earn.  

I think I'll let them count the blank spaces as the number one.  They'll use their white boards and expo markers to create tally marks for how many points they are getting...



Not bad for $2.00 and a small amount of time with some left over fabric paints.
I also found this cute little "pencil" holder that I thought would be great to store the frogs inside while waiting to play the game.


A little paint makes a frog on the front of this even more cute!

Barrel of Monkeys


Score one for the Walmart Clearance aisle!  The Barrel of Monkeys game was on for $2.50!....and it's green!  So I decided to add some painted numbers to the monkeys....


Now the math tub idea is to pull out two or three monkeys and write addition and subtraction sentences with the monkey's numbers.... no worksheet at this time...they'll use the white boards and earn cubes or coins for their team by the number of sentences they record.

Spring Graphing Station


Students complete this worksheet from the graph they create from a cube they roll.

Create as many of the picture cubes as you would like to have at the station.



Students roll the cube and record their throws on the graph.


After the graph is complete, students color a block for each roll.

Scrambled Words for HFW


Mrs. Morrow blogged about a cute star word center she created for her kindergartners.  I loved the idea of the eggs and unscrambling words since we have the story of "Mole and the Baby Bird" this week....so I bumped it up a notch to include sentence writing.

I'll put the scrabble letter tiles to spell each High Frequency Word from this week's story into a plastic egg.  Then kids can crack the egg, unscramble the letters and create a High Frequency word from their paper.  After they find the word on their paper, they can color the egg, rewrite the word, and then write a sentence using the word.

Spin to Win with Pinwheels


My two favorite things .... dollar spots and frogs.... and in the same place!  Yipee!  Just a bit of fabric paint and vola!....presto change-o...an adorable frog spinner becomes a useful number spinner for a math station game... 

The kids will use this nifty little spinner to play "Spin to Win".  Spin the spinner two times to get two numbers to add together in your brain (mental math is still such a hard concept!)...then see if you can create a related subtraction fact using the two numbers you spun...

Here's the gameboard!  Hope it makes sense!



The idea is if I spin a 2 and a 5....I add them in my brain to get 7....then I look on my board to see if I can make a related subtraction fact...7-5=2...If I can I record the subtraction fact...if I can't, I color in one of the parts on my pinwheel....the person who finishes all their related subtraction facts BEFORE they color in all the parts of their pinwheel is the winner...

Ten Flashing Fireflies


Ten Flashing Fireflies by Philemon Sturges is a great resource for math activities!  I snagged an empty pickle jar (plastic of course) from the band's concession stand before they threw it away.  I'm adding fireflies with number problems inside.  

 

Students will pull out the firefly cards and solve the problem.  
I haven't created a worksheet to go with it as my kiddos like using the whiteboards too much right now.  They record the number sentences on their boards and when station time is over, they earn point for their class team for the problems they solve.


You could also add fireflies and have kids pull two numbers out to add or subtract...create task cards and have kids pull out fireflies to put into categories...flies that equal 9, 8, etc...

You could even put literacy skills on the firefly cards and have them sort words.
